Hiking in Martinique: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Martinique is an overseas department of France located in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. Apart from its coastal walking paths, the ascent of Mont Pelée -an active volcano and the highest peak on the island- is a favorite among hikers. The volcano famously erupted in 1902 killing more than 30,000 people and then again in 1929 (though this time the area was evacuated in time to prevent casualties). During the ascent, hikers pass by fern forests and can observe the unique flora and fauna on Mount Pelée´s slopes, before getting to the volcano´s caldeira and, eventually, its summit.

Walking paths for all levels

In Martinique, you'll find more than 350 km of walking paths. Discover the lush forests in the north of the island, walk along coastal paths or hike to the top of Mont Pelée. Some of these paths were opened by colonists to traverse the island.

At 1397 meters, Mont Pelee is an active volcano and the highest mountain on the island. To climb it, you´ll start at a rainforest, pass by the volcano´s caldeira and then reach the summit from which you´ll enjoy incredible views.

Martinique is most famous for its rugged scenery and paradisiac white-sand beaches. Relax on some of the island's most famous beaches after an active day of hiking on some of its walking paths.

Peak season is from December to April. May is also a good month to visit. There is a risk of hurricanes during the summer and fall.
