FAQs: Backcountry Skiing in Mount Yotei

What should I know about Backcountry Skiing Mount Yotei?

Due to the quantity and quality of the powder that it receives each winter, Mount Yotei is an incredibly popular backcountry skiing destination. It’s name in Japanese, Ezo-Fuji, literally translates into Mount Fuji of Hokkaido.

Rising to 1.898 meters above sea level, practically from sea level, there are plenty of excellent options both on the slopes as well as around the volcano’s base. Mount Yotei is the tallest mountain in the region and offers the longest skiing runs down its slopes.

Among the most popular backcountry spots are spending five to eight hours skiing up to the crater and then speeding right back down its steep and snowy slopes.

Exploring the forest and surrounding national park are also great ways to spend a backcountry skiing trip to the mountain. Most skiing here is rated intermediate or advanced, so perfect for powder hounds looking for something different.

Why should I choose Mount Yotei for my Backcountry Skiing adventure?

Stunning scenery

This active stratovolcano sits in the midst of Shikotsu-Tōya National Park and offers some incredible scenery in which to ski. Lake Shikotsu, the Noboribetsu hot springs and local forests all present an incredible backdrop for backcountry skiing. Views from the top of the mountain are equally excellent.
Perfect powder

Due to its unique location on the island of Hokkaido, Mount Yotei receives some of the deepest and highest quality powder each winter. This makes backcountry skiing incredibly enjoyable. The texture of the powder is perfect for heading off-piste and escaping from the nearby resorts means there is plenty pristine powder waiting.

Come for the culture

Hokkaido, the island on which Mount Yotei is located, offers an excellent cultural experience. When you are not out in the powder, enjoy the incredible local culture. Check out some of the local architecture and be sure to try local delicacies, such as a hot pot. Be sure to finish the day off with a glass of local wine or beer.
