FAQs: Backcountry Skiing in Italy

What should I know about Backcountry Skiing Italy?

Running across the entirety of northern Italy, the Alps and their subranges offer plenty of backcountry skiing opportunities. From hut-to-hut treks across the Dolomites to single day adventures on the Monte Rosa massif, there is something for everyone in this iconic Mediterranean country.

Heading to places such as the northern Dolomites, Courmayeur or Monte Rosa also make for great jumping off points to iconic parts of Austria, France and Switzerland. Tyrol, Mont Blanc and Zermatt are also easily reached from northern Italy, adding another dimension to your backcountry skiing adventure.

However, staying in Italy offers plentiful fun and excitement. Prior to or after your backcountry skiing adventure explore some of the local culture. Turin, Venice and Milan are all near certain spots in the Alps and offer some spectacular sightseeing of their own.

Why should I choose Italy for my Backcountry Skiing adventure?

Stunning scenery

The Italian Alps are gorgeous. Stunningly scenic mountains, the karst features of the Dolomites and the alpine lakes and forests all make for a spectacular backdrop to any backcountry skiing adventure. Head out for a day or a week into these spectacular landscapes, you won’t regret it.

Come for the culture

While you’re in Italy, take advantage of this storied and rich culture. When you’re not out on the slopes explore the architecture, museums, food and, especially, wine of whichever region you happen to be in! Spend a few days exploring Aosta, Venice and Turin before or after your trip.

**Courmayeur **

Situated in the Aosta Valley and lying on the border of France, Courmayeur is one of Europe’s most popular backcountry skiing destinations, and with good reason. Enjoy stunningly scenic descents down the side of Mont Blanc or Monte Rosa, plenty of variety and perfect powder.

What can I expect from the weather in Italy?

During the winter months, the north of Italy is generally quite cold with mean daily temperatures of -7ºC. Temperatures increase a bit in the spring, but not by much. While the area receives plenty of snowfall, there are also many clear days; ideal conditions for ski touring.

How can I get to Italy?

This depends on where you’re headed. For the Aosta Valley and Piedmont, flights into the Geneva International Airport (GVA) or the international airport in Turin (TRN) get you there most quickly. If you’re headed to the Dolomites, then flying into the Venice airport (VCE). From each of these, the most popular starting points can be reached by bus, train or airport shuttle.
